No. We do not support virtual dub neither Sonic Foundry Vegas.
In some cases it is possible to repair an avi file by editing its header
or RIFF blocks tree - but this is hardly to imagine it done over the network :(

i can use to play every different codec that is used today so my

i get refered to but i need to no which one will really work so
i can play my movies. please help me anyone thank you for your time.
AM Software:
Do you want to download entire Internet at once? :)
It is rather a bad idea. Better you open an avi file using AVIedit and
then follow the instructions here at FAQ area - how to determine the
codec FourCC. Finally, google for that codec name or FourCC.
The problem is that there are hundreds of codecs so you probably never get
them all downloaded and installed (and this would be mainly useless because
you use only about a five codecs regularly).

English from Spanish?
AM Software:
An avi file doesn't include a language settings (more precisely, they have no
effect on playback). If you have another language soundtrack, then you can
add or replace existing one with AVIedit. However you must ensure they have
exactly the same duration (and content in general).

There is a way: see Process/Crop/resize...
However you'll need to compress the file once again (just after resize) so

Comments:Excuse me. I have been trying to open an avi
file using the xvid compression. I have the codec installed, and the avi
file can be played properly using Windows Media Player.
However, when I open the file with AVIEdit, all I see are the four
lines of words with the filename and the number of frames. No images.
I wonder what I have to do to make it work?
AM Software:
It seems that you have a DirectShow filter installed that can decompress xvid
files. (Mediaplayer uses it). Though, AVIedit needs a Video for Windows xvid
codec - which is not the same as DirectShow filter.

Comments:Why .avi files doesnt work on cd
players, as i burn some avi files from computer to cd, and now
that cd i want to play on cd player but it doesnt work ?
AM Software:
The word "some" gives absolutely no information about avi file
properties and their internals. Basically, avi files shouldn't play on a cd
players - because they need a VideoCD (a kind of mpeg1 files) instead of
an avi files. As opposite, many DVD players can play DivX/MPEG4 compressed
avi files - as well as mpeg1/mpeg2 files and DVDs. Please note that they
still can't play avi files compressed by Cinepak, Indeo and other codecs.

Comments:Hi, I have problems to convert a mpeg
file of 89MB. When I convert it without compression I can visualiza
the video in Adit, but the screen is divided in three, and I watch it
in the three screens only a third of the original video screen. Besides
it is full of vertical and horizontal lines that distort the image.
The sound is good. I've tried to compressed it but I have not had success.
Should I tried to compressed it with any special compressor or is it
another type of problem. Thank u all PD: I have a XP windows.
AM Software:
It is recommended that you use some compression when converting mpeg files,
because default one makes the picture distorted by Windows YUV decoder.
If you do not need to edit the avi file later, you can use DivX or MPEG4
compression that makes output file much smaller and lets you see (decode) it
easily in AVIedit and other applications.
If you would need to edit avi file more and more, then better you use a lossless
codec like HuffYUV or AVIzlib. Anyway, don't leave "undefined" compression.

another vcd. However, I can't see how to get AVIedit to go right to

AM Software:
You'll see no help for "chop" - but there is a topic about "splitting" avi
files. Please read it first.
When you go to the end of movie, you can Zoom Out (hit grey minus key)
to make more frames to fit into AVIedit window. Then make sure the latest
selected frame is really the latest one - just see whether it's a dark grey
rectangular area there, past the frame you think about.

im trying to merge an avi file and sub, can this be done? i want to burn the movie to a cd-r so i can watch it on my dvd player, i have the avi file and the sub file, how can i do this?
thanks
AM Software:
AVIedit won't merge any sub file to the avi file. It seems that you'd need to
"imprint" texts into the movie picture - and recompress the movie as well. This
would decrease video quality, so we don't think it's a nice and useful feature.

Comments:Hi and thanks for the wonderful product.
I'm a newbie to the audio/video area so I'll spell it out as
much as I can. I have an avi file that was dark and I used the
answer here to lighten it. Works great as long as I'm viewing it
in the AVIEdit program. When I export it, I "select all" and then choose
select all. Then I choose, File-->Export-->AVI and when prompted
for a name, I choose another name and a different place than
the original. When I open up the new file, it is just as dark as the original.
My question is what am I doing wrong since it is still so dark?
I would appreciate any/all help since I'm really getting frustrated with this
dark video that I want to send to someone else. Please, can anyone help???
Thanks in advance,
Deb
AM Software:
Most likely, you didn't set AVIedit to filter _exported_ frames as well.
By default, when you add a filter in Process/Filter dialog box, only one
checkbox gets turned ON in a group called What to filter. You see filtered
movie because Preview checkbox is ON. First time Export checkbox and Import
are both OFF, so when you export movie, filters are inactive.
The only reason to leave other options in their inactive state (OFF) is that
filters may work very slowly and significantly decrease performance. If/when
you really need them to process Export, please set corresponding checkbox to ON.

old super8 film needing sync. I don't know if it's a codec problem.
I'm runnig W98SE. Both films were divided in two files. Ever seen this problem?
Thank you for your help.
AM Software:
In AVIedit playback is not optimized for speed, because it needs frame-by-frame
editing. For DivX movies where key frame interval is set to large values (30...200)
AVIedit needs to decompress (in worst case) 199 frames before "current" one in realtime.
This may cause jerks in video. However, you wouldn't see them if scroll slowly (by 1 frame) using arrow keys
When you play back clips in mediaplayer, image can be broken if file was downloaded
with errors or 2nd part doesn't start with a key frame. In both cases decompression
fails and picture may look distorted, frozen or "move" randomly.

AVIedit expects the source file to be MPEG1. Unfortunately both MPEG2

AM Software:
From your message we guess that windows media player was used to playback
the clips. Unfortunately, every time you play a movie that has "unknown"
codec (not installed one) mediaplayer tries to download one from Microsoft site.
This is fun because there are only about five codecs made by MS and nothing else. All the
rest has to be downloaded and installed from their vendor sites. So, you
need to install DivX codec and Xvid as well.

AM Software:
To make your movies playable anywhere, be sure you choose right compression
when you save project. MP42 stands for Microsoft MPEG4 V2 codec available at
MS' site - however your friends may have to download and install the same codec on every
PC you're going to show the movie.

Comments:It's difficult to say when this problem started
ocurring, (possibly the latest build?) but AVIedit
has some terrible seeking issues when working with video that has
very long key frame intervals. Specifically, when stepping back
frame-by-frame or jumping forward more than 1 frame at
a time the program wastes a whole lot of time "thinking".
With DIVx videos it can take more than 4 seconds just to step back 1 frame!
The only way I can get it to go reasonably fast
is never to work with videos having key frame intervals beyond
half a second or to stay away from compressed video entirely.
AM Software:
AVIedit and any other software needs to decompress every frame from the
nearest previous key frame to the current one just to show it. That's the
way temporal compression works. If key frame number is 1 and your current
frame is 100, then AVIedit needs to decode 99 frames before you can see
anything. On a slow computer this would take some amount of CPU time.
When you use a player to watch the movie, you do not see delays because it
decompresses frames sequentially and maximum processing time is the same as for
single frame decode.
When your avi file has no index or is truncated, seeking is slow as well.
Even slower than the case above...

still picture that I print on glossy paper. I could also use the
video mode of my camera to create video file, but it is memory
consumming. So I would like to know if there is a solution with
AVIedit to create an AVI file (640*480) from a one picture file
6400*480 (assembly of 10 still picture) that could make a panoramic video
of around 20 seconds from left to right so I can view as VCD on my DVD
player.
OR
I am able to generate QTIME VR from my panoramic picture but it
is not readable on DVD player, so is there a way
to convert it in AVI file ?
Thanks for your nice software.
AM Software:
Currently AVIedit doesn't read mov files, so you'd need either make
an avi file or a mpeg1 file (AVIedit has a converter from mpeg1 to avi).
Regarding your question, you can copy and paste your single frame
many times to get a long "static" wide screen movie. Then, apply Transfomer
filter, or Layer filter with x coordinate set to move frame to the left. Next,
add a crop option with frame width set to 640. This way you'll get a picture
moving behind the 640x480 frame. Finally export it to a new avi file.

a "Capture driver isn't connected...Please make sure your hardware
is propperly installed and configured... ..."
When I do this, I get a "No video capture hardware found" mesage.
What am I doing wrong? TIA...
AM Software:
It seems you misunderstand some terms. Capture means you are getting
stills or movies from a live video source (that you don't seem to have
because AVIedit found no driver for it). Export means you extract
a single image or many frames from an avi file. File and live video - that
makes the difference.
And please note AVIedit is NOT FREEWARE. It is free to download and try out,
but then you must pay for it if you need it.

that the length of the movie is 2.13 minutes. When I scroll back
(rewind) I can see other footages of the movie. So the problem is
that the file contains the whole movie, but somehow some
kind of setting is indicating that the length of
the movie is only 2.13 minutes. How
can I change this setting to it’s normal length 90 min?

Hi. I have Windows XP. Recently my Windows Media Player refused to
read video files. So did QuickTime Player. It says "Windows Media Player
cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not
support the format you are trying to play". All the films i try to view aren't
played! They are not corrupt and the format is .avi. I've downloaded codecs
for Media Player, but the problem doesn't dissapear. The video in games also
doesn't go. What seems to be the problem? :( P.S.- .mov files are played
perfectly. I'm not sure about .mpeg files, but they probably don't work
too.

You can add "false" avi header at beginning of the file and fill in the
header fields manually. Then run DivFix tool to recalculate file index etc.
Anyway this would require a lots of typing...

You may wish to crop the frame to make subtitles appear outside it. Also
it is possible to paint over the subtitles. Unfortunately there is no

I opened an Avi video to compress it using the xVid Mpeg 4 Codec.
The problem is: the image is getting vertically flipped. Then I repeated using
the rotate option but it didn't take any effect (and I tried "Save as" and
"Export" options). What I missed? I can't rotate
AM Software:
When you need to apply any effect (including rotate) you must use Export
to avi. Also make sure you checked both Preview and Export options in
Filter manager dialog box. Please read help file for more information.
By the way, it is rather not the codec problem. Often your picture gets
flipped due to buggy DirectX video drivers (note: it will look fine in VfW
players and editors) and possible solutions could be, either change the
decoder, or update video drivers, or change "upside-down" setting of the
decoder (if any). For example ffdshow lets you flip movies on the fly as
you need it.

You can use "Find Edge" 1-3 presets to get an idea of sharpening. Also
you can build an Unsharp Mask filter by subtract original and blurred pictures.
This way you can choose from many variations of Blur and change weight

HI. I've trid to use your program, but it just won't work. i tried
to load a 15 GB avi file created by pinnacle. But the screen just clutters up,
and shows me a fragment of a timeline. and some informaiton about the amount
of frames, but the indfmation is written on top of eas other and is virtually
unreadable. I then tried (blindfolded!) to apply a denoiser filter, and then
save the result as a avi file. but it says i've selected noting... It's just
not easy when the screen is all messed up. Is the file maybe to big for
loading? My intention was to load the big file, denoice it, and then later
compress it to a suitable format for creating af DVD, so im not that fond of
splitting the file. Can you help?
AM Software:
When you have a big DV avi file, you must split it first (by 2GB segments),
make sure it is AVI Type 2 and you need Video for Windows DV codec installed.
If/when your file picture doesn't fit into screen (640x480 or less?) you
can zoom out by grey minus key. When you denoise or apply any effect, you
must export the file. Export works for selected part of file.
By the way, suitable format to DVD is MPEG2.

I'm looking for some software for editing DVR capture on security

recording and clean it up so I can make out cars. Right now the picture
resolution is too low. Will AM software allow this kind of
cleaning/editing?
AM Software:
If you capture to 320x240, then AVIedit can resize image up to 480x320.
However this will not add any details that are originally missing in the
source frame. Picture will be bigger and may be cleaned, though you'll
not have a more detailed picture. Better you do video capture at higher
resolution.

Comments:I am running a P4 with WinXP Pro and have
plenty of juice to run video editing. My problem is that I cannot
find a DV converter that works to convert my miniDV camcorders type 1
to type 2 so I can edit it using VirtualDub or Tmpgenc. I tried
a little free program, think it was just called DV converter or
something like that, and it would do the whole 12 GB video but
for some reason, usually in the 2nd half of the video, the sound
would become pure static noise (when played back using Windows Media
Player). I tried over and over again and the results would vary as
to which point the noise would rear its ugly head, but I could not
get a perfect conversion. The video was perfect, but I need audio too.
So when I discovered AVIedit I was eager to try it out. So far, it's
worse than the previous little freeware program. It goes
through the conversion process and what I am left with is a 5GB file
(from a 12GB type I source file) and it won't even play in
Media player or AVIedit. Even if it did, it can't be useful at only 5GB
from 12GB there is obviously significant date loss. I have most
or all of the relevant codecs working on my machine,
unless I have overlooked some. I have mainconcept's DV
codec and the codec provided in the software for
my camcorder (which is a Panasonic by the way). Any suggestions
or similar experiences out there?
AM Software:
It's simple. Type 2 files are limited to 2GB in size for compatibility
reasons. You must split AND convert your 12GB avi file, or results
will be poor. AVIedit lets you specify "in" and "out" points so you can
extract a smaller portion of huge avi file.

Comments:Hi. I just downloaded AVIEdit for the purpose of
compressing a sequence of 350 BMPs into an AVI, ideally DivX. I started up
the program, "imported" my BMPs, and was presented with a list of my
installed codecs to choose from. Okay.
So I chose "DivX ;-) MPEG 4" and got an AVI that played, with the content
visible, but -distorted- and -miscolored- in a way that suggested the
program didn't know the correct line-pitch. Each row of pixels
(in the correctly playing movie) was shifted left with respect to the
row above it, shearing the image along a diagonal slice.
Bad bad bad -- but surprisingly fast and promising. I went back and
tried other codecs. "DivX 5.1 Pro" crashed, "Microsoft MPEG 4" generated
a black AVI, and finally, "Microsoft Video 1" generated a correct AVI
without distortion.
So -- yay, I have an AVI, but not a DivX AVI. (The "Windows Video 1" codec
produces pretty large AVIs, about 4 times what I was hoping for, from DivX.)
And yet I know my "DivX" encoder itself is fine -- because I've used it
successfully with Gordian Knot to encode DivX copies of DVDs.
But Gordian Knot is complicated -- I don't know how to use it to
create a DivX from * individual-frames * or even if this can be
done -- and that's why I downloaded your program instead.
So, er.. do you have any clue why my DivX codec, which
works fine under Gordian Knot, has this image distortion result
when I use your program .. and yet your program works fine
using "Windows Video 1" and also "Full Frames (Uncompressed)".
Any help fixing this would be awesome. I love your
program's clean interface and rapid results, but I need
DivX-level of compression which at the moment I can't get.
Thanks!
-Egon
AM Software:
It seems that your bitmap files have some wrong color properties,
maybe 16 bits per pixel, instead of expected 24 or 32. This results in
a) squeezed image b) codec format misunderstanding.
Regarding DivX 5.x codecs, they never were, are, neither expected
to be standard ones. Just a home made binaries from stolen source codes.
They do not fix their errors, do not reply to email requests, do not
hear the minds in their forums. Ok, we can live without'em.
For example, VSS codec has compression ratio about the same as DivX and
it is free (unlike ad-driven DivX Pro).

Hello.
Small and powerfull Programm, and of course I have a problem:

imports 50-60 pictures, then stops. Is there any solution to this problem?

join them all together, but I would prefer a
clean "Import all files" solution.)
Thanks for any advice.

Comments:Hi.
I would like to seek some help here. I finally managed to write
out 1760frames as an AVI(UNCompressed) using C, but have realized
that if I were to save at a high resolution(resulting in over 3 GB),
than the AVI file is not properly "saved" and can't be played.
I read through some comments and it says, for AVI, a maximum
of 2GB can be written. So if I were to use compression,
say MPEG4, would it be easy to just change a portion of
my code, or would I need to add and download
extra codec stuffs?
In addition, I tried to encode my AVI(lower resolution one) to MPEG1
using some program(TMPEGEnc) and the result looks quite bad
to me...as in much blockier and blurred. I wonder if there's
other tricks to it or maybe MPEG4 would work better??
Thank you in advance,
Yingtian.

AM Software:
Perhaps the frame dimensions are wrong. FLC/FLI files are limited to
320x200, 320x240 and few other picture sizes. Thus, a 300x220 avi frame may
cause an incompatible FLI or FLC file you can't play back. Without some
better avi file description we can't suggest other solutions.

There is probably no one-click solution, but (in theory) you can fix required
fields of avi file header manually (using a hexadecimal editor). This way is
not easy, neither is it hard. BUT it's extremely annoying. If you can, better
you do recapture once again.

AVIedit can import mpeg1 files (.mpg) by temporal avi file creation. This avi

despeckle and maybe even simple blur filter.
The same can be done with any avi file, but .mov files should be converted
to avi format first. Currently AVIedit can't import/convert .mov files.

this? i've tried using other video editors but theyr way too complicated ( i

AM Software:
In general, message "Can't play audio" or "Can't stop currently playing sound"
means that AVIedit failed to play audio track of current avi file. There
are some common cases when this error occurs.
- audio compression format is unknown (mp3, ogg vorbis, other proprietary formats)
- audio stream is truncated (it's typical for tiny avi clips downloaded
from digital cameras)
- some other applications keep the audio hardware busy
First of all, make sure you have an ACM codec for your current movie audio
track.

Please use our free diagnostic software (AVIdiag) to check your system health

This way you could see the missing video codec or whatever. (Better, write

The type (algorithm) of video compression in an avi file is marked by Fourcc (4

Edit PAL? Hi, Is it possible to use AVIedit to edit PAL video
format (from mini-DV)? Can it convert it then to NTSC? Many thanks, David
AM Software:
AVIedit can edit any format, PAL, SECAM and NTSC etc.
It is easy to resize the PAL frame to NTSC, however the frame speed (fps)
can't be changed smoothly from 25 to 30. That means, you can load a few PAL
clips onto timeline, set the output frame speed to 29.997, change output
frame size to 640x480 and make a new avi from timeline. But the extra frames
required to fill 30 fps will be simply "duplicated" from existing ones. Ideal
solution would be, interpolate these to get extras, - AVIedit can't interpolate.

The Info menu item just lets you see some file and stream properties. You

The frame resize must be done via Crop-Resize dialog.

Hmm. Are you sure it is exactly "1 kbps" ? Basically an uncompressed file would
run at higher rates - however you can't restore any information lost at compression
time. In other words, one can decompress avi file to a few times bigger one, but
this won't involve any picture quality increase.

I have just installed my tv card and i was wondering how to make
my avi files smaller? is there a program that can do it? im not very strong in
this area and not sure quite how to use a codec to make the avi's smaller? any
words of wisdom?
AM Software:
AVIedit is one of the software titles that can make avi files smaller (compress
them). You can use Export or Save to put your video into a new avi file. You'll
be asked about compression, so you'd have to choose some codec and set its options.
Please visit our Fourcc section to read a few words about many popular codecs.
The particular codec settings are always a tradeoff between the quality loss
and resulting file size. For example, DivX 3 codec offers average (VHS) quality
at bitrates about 600-900 kbits/sec, but when you double this bitrate, you not
only get the two times large file, also you'll get much higher picture quality.
When you have time to experiment with different codec settings, try to change
quality and/or bitrate by approx. 30% in either direction. Compare the results
and make your final decision.

By default AVIedit sets the frame rate of exported clip to 15 fps unless you
check "same as source" option. Most likely you were missing it.
The file size of uncompressed file should be a few times bigger than source.
When you compress it, file may get smaller than source, or equal... It depends

File header contains two interesting strings, WMV1 and AsfTools v2. That means
the avi file was formerly a Windows Media Video (.wmv) file and then converted
by AsfTools into .avi format. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not allow playback
of any WMV1 compressed content outside of their ASF or WMV file container. Since
there is no standalone Video for Windows compatible WMV1 codec, this file is
absolutely useless now (except for audio track maybe).

Some capture cards do not show their control pages when you're in legacy

Capture. Then you can see the control pages being in DirectShow mode, most
likely you'll find also the video standard change control. Particular design
of these controls depends on software driver vendor and/or OEM software that

Hello. I am trying to edit a particularly long video I captured
some time ago, however just past two hours the audio and video cut out. The
entire file plays fine in every playback program I've tried. Is there a limit
to how much audio/video AVIedit can process? If so, would purchasing the full
version correct the problem? Thanks for your help.
AM Software:
Basically, AVIedit can handle up to 2 or 4 GB per avi file, depending on
software that created the file. Compressed videos would take longer playback
time than raw uncompressed ones. For average compressed divx movies it is
possible to have about 3-4 hours in one file of largest valid size. On the
other hand, Timeline allows you to place many avi segments together, having
a virtually unlimited total project size (about 150-200 files per project is fine, each up
to 2 GB in size). Timeline is limited in trial version. However registration
does not enlarge 2/4 GB size limit of single avi file any further. That implies
about 18 minutes per scene limit when you use DV compression (because it offers
poor compression ratio vs. DivX, VSS or Indeo 5). Again, you can put many
scenes together for large movies.
The most popular playback software today is DirectShow based. It does not
have size limits when you use NTFS file system (WinXP or W2K) and use OpenDML
file format extensions. Unfortunately it is not very suitable for editing, this
is why AVIedit does not use DirectShow in critical pieces of code.

One of the possible troubles is that file was partially downloaded. The header

- assign AVIedit as .avi file context menu handler
- in Open File dialog box, double-click file name before the preview tends to start
- use command line to specify an avi file name to open
- use recent files list to load previously edited avi's
- use a shorten file name (?)

hi, was wondering how do you use the cromakey feature?
AM Software:
It lets you put a transparent pictures (logo, artistic frames etc.) over the
video clip. To make some color or range of colors transparent, you need to
choose the basic color and the tolerance, also you need to specify the active
area where the keying is done. This can be blue or green colors for example.

I'm considering buying this product, but I have a question first.
I see this tool can capture single frames: Great! Is it possible to apply
effects in realtime when capturing? I'm looking for a way of inverting
negative singleframes to positiv singleframes when doing frame captures. Is
this possible, or can it be made possible? Thanks for your time.
Andreas
AM Software:
Currently AVIedit does not apply effects to captured frames from live source.
You can attach some converter software to AVIedit capture engine so that it
would be called on every captured picture. If you have such a command line
tool (like IrfanView or another graphics converter software) then you can
do what you need.
However, when you try to capture desired frames in time (from live video)
it is hard to choose when to click the capture button. As opposite, it is
far more easily to select good frames from captured avi file. In addition,
filters can be applied when you extract stills from an avi file. It is
enough to have about 2-3 seconds of video (60-70 frames) to choose from.

three more. I have these cameras FTP one frame every 10 seconds to a server
for a total of 140,000 jpg files per camera. This covers about two weeks.
Would it be possible for me to script AVIedit so that every two weeks it would
batch convert those 140,000 jpg files into an AVI movie? I would like it to do
so unattended. Also, do you have a non-profit/educational license for schools?
Thanks.
AM Software:
AVIedit can't be run from a script because it needs a human interaction when
choosing a video compressor for new movie. It is simple action but still
needs a few mouse clicks :(
We offer volume discounts for both non-profit and educational entities. Typical
price is less than $20 per copy, for 15 licenses or more. It can be discussed
further with orders@ AM Software.

Typically uncompressed avi files have their fourcc code set to 'DIB ', four

I have downloaded a movie off of Kaaza but it was split into two
files. Is it possible to combine these two files into one then burn it to DVD.
If so, how do I do this. I am new to this, so laymans terms would be greatly
appreciated.
AM Software:
Depending on what type of software was used to split your movie, it can
or can not be assembled in AVIedit. If both files have .avi extension
and you can play them both separately, then use File|Append menu item.
If your files are not avi, then you will need to convert them to avi first,
or use another tool. If you can't play the 2nd part, there it is a chance
that a binary file splitter was used and you need the same tool to combine
two parts, not AVIedit nor any other avi editing tool.

I have a 189M AVI video that only shows a 55 sec clip of something

remove the spam and play only the stuff after? Someone on Virtual Dub's Forum
said it was multiple video streams and that AVIEdit could separate them. (I
opened the file in AVIEdit, but I could see no way to go beyond the 55 sec end
point.) They may have been talking about an AVIEdit that used to be in
Microsoft's VFW SDK. Can anyone help me out? Thanks! Mike K.
AM Software:
Most likely this movie does not contain anything else. Today posting a fake
clips is common practice to raise your d/l ratio in P2P networks like eDonkey,
Kazaa & others. In AVIedit you can click grey minus key few times, or manually
change the zoom factor (see Play|Zoom menu item) to make more frames and
video tracks fit into AVIedit window. If there is a second, third etc. video
stream - you will see it below the 1st one. If there are no extra video streams,
it's time to relax and play golf :(

AVIedit can crop video frames, too. See Process|Crop/resize menu item and dialog

targa images (with transparent background) will be converted into an AVI OK. I
try to import 30 images and the highest numbered one goes into the FIRST
frame, instead of the 30th frame. Is this a bug??
AM Software:
This is not a bug. Windows places last selected element (one that has focus
rectangle) at first place of file list. This is so in every file selection
dialog box. If you need to have right order of elements, then select last
desired file name, hold down SHIFT key and click first desired file name.
This behavior is documented in AVIedit help file and (humorously) in MS Movie
Maker help file (four years later).
BTW, avi files do not support transparency.

AM Software:
Windows includes a DirectShow filter that handles DV decoding in realtime. By
default it works in half resolution mode. Maybe you need to switch it to full
resolution (this is more CPU demanding). This is possible via clip or filter
properties in mediaplayer main menu (depends on version of m.p.) - this way
you'll get a better picture using the same hardware.

AVIedit can't split mpeg files directly, but you can convert entire file, or
some parts of it, into a divx avi or whatever. Maybe you'll even have no need
to split the file due to its smaller size (after compression to divx).

If your hardware is still working properly (not electrically damaged) then

to shorten the sizes for download that way you don't have to sacrifice video
quality for file size, much). I was wondering if there was a way to uncompress
the files to the size and quality they were before the tosser compressed them,
so I can compress them with a larger bitrate and preserve the quality.

No. Just no, because original image information is lost.
BTW, pkzip is useless in image compression. The best result would be
a 30% save, while many video codecs allow up to 50:1...200:1 compression.

I'm trying to fade the end of a video file to black. Is there an
easy(ish) way to do this in AVIedit?
AM Software:
One way is, use scripting language and Color Adjustment filter together. You
can 'program' virtually any effect that changes brightness, color or contrast
by using a Basic-style math equations.
The other way is, make a black bitmap and place your clip and the bitmap on
the timeline, so that they are overlapped in time. This way AVIedit automatically
adds a fade transition, and since our picture is black, the clip will fade to
black. Also please visit our Readings section and look for article about
crossfading.

Regarding your questions, AVIedit lets you rotate avi files (BTW, there is a help

get few times bigger than source. Also the key frames interval may cause file
size change. The smaller it is, the bigger is resulting avi file.

AVIedit shows you a system-defined Video Compression Dialog that lists
only the codecs that
- were properly installed on this PC
- can handle current video stream properties (picture size & color bit depth)
Thanks to Microsoft, Windows XP and Win2000 have another codec installation
routine. It is different from one used in Win95, Win98 and Me, so 90% of installers written
for older systems will not work. That means, you'll never see an error message,

Most likely, you have incorrectly selected a split point. The 2nd part must start
with a key frame, or "do not recompress" option will disappear. Please
read our article about repair of DivX files.
If your movie has a VBR MP3 sound track, or file is truncated due to broken

no troubles with standard avi files (with constant mp3 bitrate).

zero, then maybe your audio input is assigned to microprone jack. Change it to
line-in using sndvol32.exe /r and/or check the recording level - it
shouldn't be zero or muted.

just wondering if there is any way of burning a 700mb avi file
onto a single 700mb cd-r and if not what is the best way of doing
this
AM Software:
Many software titles will do this with ease. For example, Nero Burning ROM
will burn a 700mb avi file to 700mb cd-r. BTW, a 700mb cd-r can store up to
703mb of user data (approx. 735,000,000 bytes) without overburning, so there
is no any problem.
Just a question - what's the way this refers to AVIedit?

I am testing your product to transfer a type 2 .avi created by
Pinnacle Studio 8 to a type 1 .avi that can be used by Premiere. The
conversion did work (congratulations! Yours was the only one of three I tried
that DID the job). But the resulting video has lost quality - jagged edges,
etc. I tried doing the conversion with no compression, and other settings,
with no change. Am I missing something?
AM Software:
Conversion from type 1 to type 2 and vice versa does not involve any data
change. Only the way they stored in a file actually changes. Most likely, you're
using two different DV codecs (one is called for type 1, the other for type 2)
and their settings are also different. Standard Microsoft DV decoder can
use a half-size picture (for speedup reason) and this will degrade the quality,
of course. But this does not affect a disk file, just set the full resolution
for decompressor, and the same DV avi will play back fine, with original quality.

I hope i am not bothering anyone by asking this, but.. How can I
play an AVI file that has a FOURCC code "0"? Is this possible? Or is this an
invalid file code?
AM Software:
In fact an avi file has two FOURCC codes, one is file handler CC, the other is
video stream handler CC. (Audio stream has FOURCC zero because it uses another
way to store compression format). For example, DivX 5.0.x codec has file handler
FOURCC 'divx' and stream FOURCC 'DX50'. File handler can be empty or zero, but
stream handler is mandatory unless there is raw uncompressed (dib) avi file. It
is possible to edit or play files with empty file handler FOURCC using
AVIedit and other third-party tools, though some versions of mediaplayer fail to open such files.

I have a movie in two avis, and they have VBR sound, so when I try
to merge them it will not let me, so do I have to extract the audio and then
merge them serperately without audio, then add the audio, or what? I cannot
get anything to work. Thanks for any help
AM Software:
VBR is not standard for AVI files. The problem is that these files often have
invalid audio format header (or, say "non standard" if you like) and you'd
need some other tools to handle VBR sound.
BTW, when you need to make a single avi of two pieces, use Append instead of Merge.
Merge was designed to add extra sound tracks, not to join files consequently.

Hi, i don't know this exact question has been asked earlier,
excuse me if it does, but i have a question: after downloading a movie the
sound didn't work in Windows Media Player as well in AviEdit. I discovered
that i had to download the AC3 filter which made the sound work immediately in
WMPlayer. But unfortanetly.. the sound still does not work in AviEdit. The
error message says: "Audio stream playback. Can't stop currently playing
sound". It didn't mean that in some other program audio is playing, because
with other files the sound worked fine. How come? the codec was installed on
my computer, so AviEdit has to recognize it, doesn't it? Greetzz
AM Software:
There are two major types of decoders: DirectShow filters and Video for Windows
codecs. AVIedit needs a Video for Windows codec (either video or audio) while
mediaplayer uses a DirectShow filter (that one you found). Your AC3 decoder
is invisible to AVIedit, it tries to play the sound but fails. Normally this
happens when another application uses audio hardware at the same time. This is
why AVIedit pops such a misleading message. Bottom line is, you need AC3 audio
codec made by Video for Windows specs.

AVIedit allows you to select the filtered media: imported bitmaps, exported and

I plan on downloading your trial version AVIedit 3.36 So i can cut
a 708mb .AVI movie into 2 files so i can fit the movie onto a disk. (disk only

movie onto my friends computer (which i downloaded and installed AVIedit 3.36
to break up the movie into 2 files) but i plan on taking the disks back to my
home to watch them. Now, when i get back home, do i need to connect the 2
movie sections together or after coping the files on my harddisk, can i play
the one file , then once it ends, play the other file. Or should i just instal
AVIedit 3.36 on my home computer and re-connect the 2 movie segments? I really
appreciate the help.
AM Software:
In fact, either way works. You can split a movie, then join the parts together.
Or you can play part A, then play part B without connecting them back into a
single avi file. Third way is, cut off the titles, recompress them to a smaller
size, then join them at former place. This way you could write the entire movie
to a single CD-R media. Also (sometimes) it is possible to overburn your CD-R
to fit a bit bigger file.

In fact, if you load MS Word, open some .doc file and save it to command.com,
ntldr or any other system file, nobody can stop you except yourself. Currently
only the root folder of C:\ can be assumed as really existing folder, so AVIedit
defaults to C:\ for any open/save action. You can override this if you feel it's

First of all, we're in no way affiliated with Adobe Inc. so please don't ask
for support of Adobe Premiere 5.1 and their other products here. Virtually any DV camcorder works with
freeware DV_IO utility. Its only limitation is, no DV preview while capture,
so you should use camcorder viewfinder or LCD to watch your movie in progress.
This may help you to get DV movies from your camcorder and save to avi format.
It seems the rest editing can be done in AVIedit, Premiere or any other non-linear

AM Software:
There are basically two (and only two) mpeg file types, MPEG1 and MPEG2.
They do not need a decompressor (like an avi file) because MPEG1 decoder is
built-in into DirectX, and MPEG2 decoder is installed when you set up any
DVD player software. Unlike these two, MPEG4 also known as DivX, can only
be saved in avi file format, and almost always needs an external decompressor
(codec). You shouldn't have any trouble playing a mpeg file, if not, refresh
your DirectX install, or DVD software install. For an avi file, see our FAQ
section about how do you detect a codec of your file.

Hallo, after I installed AVIEdit I was surprised positvely about
the posibilities it offers. However, I tried to open a avi file (Divx-Codec),
edit it and export it into avi (with Divx- and Mepeg-3-Codec), but it doesn't
work. I have the problem that I can't choose the audio-codec when I want do
export the movie into avi (file -> export -> avi -> ... -> last
step). Changing the video-codec is possible. I also tried to change the audio
codec using "options -> avi settings -> audio stream -> options", but
the changes seems to get lost every time I exit this menue with "ok". In this
menu I can also increase the mpeg3-layer-3 only to 64 KBit/s, but changes
don't take effect ... This codec is listed at "options -> acm" with the
highest quality of 320 KBit/s. I can export avi-files in other applications
(i.e. TMPGEnc) with the mpeg-layer-3 and up to 320 KBit/s since I installed
the FHG-Radium-Codec. I am using Win2k at a P3-800 with 512MB RAM. Is this a
bug, a deficit of the not-registered version, or me?
AM Software:
In general, conversion from one audio format to another is possible only when
both formats are supported by the same codec. You can decompress your audio
track to raw PCM first, then compress to any other audio format, because raw
PCM is uncompressed and therefore is most compatible. For your information,
so-called FHG-Radium mp3 codec is a hacked version of mp3 codec
developed by Fraunhofer Institut, Germany. We offer no support for it, call
Radium, he-he...

You need also apply a region to some range of frames, not just define it.

AVIedit lets you make the uncompressed PCM audio louder by using clip properties
dialog box of Timeline. However, it seems that your file was already compressed,
that is, audio was also compressed - but you have saved it as raw PCM audio.
There are two possible solutions: either use the same software, but have it
to compress your audio track, or use AVIedit to save your avi file with
compressed audio track.

Just downloaded and installed AVIedit. I have a VCR connected to
the video IN connector on a new NVidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X video card.
I was on the phone with Nvidia support yesterday and they said all thier
drivers were installed correctly and I should be able to capture video. Using
AVIedit, when I press the video camera ICON to the left of the camera ICON I
get the following message: VIDEO DEVICE ALREADY IN USE "You cannot use this
device when another video applicaiton , such as DVD, video conferencing, video
editing, TV viewers, or WEBTV for Windows is already using it. To use this
device for your current application, close the application that is using it.
If WebTV is installed and running on your system, pause the "WebTV video and
data services" on the taskbar try by right-clicing its icon and choosing
"Pause Services"." I then get cycled to a VIDEO SOURCE window where my only
choice is the "nVidia WDM Video Capture (universal)" selection. I close that
window and the first message comes up again. This goes through the window to
window process 3 times, then I get an error message that says: AVIedit error
"Capture driver isn't connected. Please make sure your hardware is properly
installed and configured. I nothing helps, try change to WDM capture using
Options|Preferences dialog box, Capture tab, clear "use legacy VfW" option and
restart." I click on the OK button and I'm back to the AVIedit main window. I
can assure you I have no other video options running although I do have dual
monitors on the NVidia card. I tried turning off the "use legacy VfW" option
and restarting. That did not help. Am I missing something here or is this a
hardware issue with my computer. It's a P4 2.2 with an Asus P4T-E mb, 512m of
ram, Windows 98se, plent of room on the hdd. All I want to do is get some
video from a VCR into the computer. Thanks, BH Davis

DAT file is typically a MPEG file, not avi file. Some codecs can flip the
picture on playback/reencode, if this is your case, then maybe add a flip/mirror
filter before you export avi to mpeg. This will work around the codec bug, if any...

Please help: I cant’ play back AVI files that were encoded with my
previous PC using the ELSA ERAZOR III card. Have you any idea if I can find
the proper CODEC ? Thanks in advance George
AM Software:
Most likely, it was using Elsa Quick Codec (fourcc looks like EQK0 or similar
one) - either you can get it from www.elsa.com (maybe www.elsa.de), or
try getting this codec from your old PC. Start AVIedit, click Options, ICM.
Find the codec in the list, look for its .DLL name, then locate the file
and copy it. On your new PC, add the codec name to [drivers32] section of
system.ini file (like this: vidc.eqk0=your-dll-name.dll ) and copy the .dll
to system or system32 Windows folder.

I'm interested in using aviedit to compress my video (AVI) that I
will be using with Pinnacle Studio 8. This would be to archive it for later
use. Does aviedit allow me to uncompress it back to AVI from the format it's
compressed in? (would that be MJPG? the built-in codec)
AM Software:
In earlier Studio versions Pinnacle products used Motion JPEG compression,
also known as MJPG or MJPEG. AVIedit lets you play and export from MJPG
compressed avi's even if no codec is installed (that is, AVIedit includes
its own decoder for MJPG). However AVIedit will not compress to MJPG if
no external codec present (this is also true for all other compressed formats).
That means you may have to install some software or hardware MJPG codec.
Some users reported that current avi files made by Pinnacle Studio are not
cross-compatible with third-party software MJPG codecs (video output to tape
may fail if the file was not encoded by Pinnacle software) - so you must
take care on this. "For later use" is probably not the best term. There are
two different "uses" of clips, editing and playback. For editing the MJPG
format is the best, while for playback only it takes too much HDD space. Perhaps
some MPEG based compression would be better (but MPEG is inconvenient for
editing). We could discuss this outside the forum...

AM Software:
The typical damage that occurs upon a power-off is blank avi header fields.
Most important are the file size and 'movi' chunk size. If their size is 0,
there is maybe no software that helps. You only can use a hexadecimal file
editor to enter the right values, and then use divfix utility. This is really
out of scope of this forum, so you may wish to contact us personally.

Hi, great program, I guess (just started). Maybe my question is
too dumb to be true, but it's really a problem; I can't save my edited avi! Id
est: I open my avi (a movie from a q3a demo), do some filter work and stuff,
then i want to save it, and it does (if I don't choose DivX ;) 5, because it
crashes if I do) but when I play this file, it's the same file as I had,
without my filter-work. Same happens with export to AVI. Seems quite censored,
I know, and I read most of posts here too, as well as help files, can't find
it. Sorry =(
AM Software:
Most likely, the trick is that you did not tell AVIedit to filter exported movie.
In filter configuration dialog you see three possible options "what to filter".
You can apply the same set of filters to still images while they are imported
into avi file, or you can filter preview mode playback only, or you can filter
also exported movie. It seems that you selected preview playback filter, but
nothing more. It is expected that you select "export" also. Then your filters
will be applied to the output movie for real.
Regarding DivX 5 trouble, please call DivX 5 support team for help.

I have just downloaded and installed AVIedit Ver.3.3.7 on
01/11/2003. I am using a uncompressed .avi(DV) file that was captured via
firewire using Premiere6.5 that is 1.85GB in size, 8:45:18 minutes in length,
15752 total frame count and 720X480 resolution as a test file for clipping and
cutting individual frames from within the clip which all works very well. But
the clip just dead stops running in the timeline editor pane window without
any error messages or warnings when it reaches frame# 8438 @ 4:41:512 minutes
every time. I have double checked all AVIedit settings and everything looks to
be set correctly? Clip plays all the way through in Premiere6.5 and Windows
Media Player. Any suggestions or comments on what I may be doing wrong will be
greatly appreciated. Thank You In Advance, RJR
AM Software:
It seems the file is OpenDML extended avi file which is typical for DV
but no good for AVIedit. It needs plain vanilla RIFF AVI files. The
difference between the two avi types (plain vs. OpenDML avi) is that
ODML lets you have huge file size by combining a few smaller RIFF data
blocks (read: smaller avi clips) in a single huge file. Plain avi file
format is limited by 2GB, while the ODML avi can include a few sub-2GB
logical blocks with total size exceeding this limit. AVIedit only can
read the 1st RIFF block from an avi file, this means a file that is
ODML one and uses two sub-blocks will be read only up to a half of
its size or like this. The possible solution is, convert your file to
plain avi format first, using built-in DV avi converter. Or, if you
can recapture, set the options such a way that you have non-ODML avi
file created.

Hi, I was wondering if AVIedit can cope with avi files with a VBR
mp3 audio track. In one of the earlier post you comment that multiplexing VBR
audio is not possible, how about demultiplexing an existing avi file with VBR
mp3 audio?
AM Software:
Quick answer is, try it yourself :)
The real problem with VBR audio files is that you cannot determine the
file seek position by desired playback time, and vice versa. Any small piece
of audio data can be compressed to a random byte size, so it seems there is no
way to deal with VBR audio correctly. Maybe the save to .wav would make
good wav files (because your avi file with VBR is already multiplexed),
however we have neither tested nor intentionally developed such a feature.

I appear to have a problem editing or playing back AVI files.
Specifically, when I try to go "too close" to the end of the AVI to start

the file instead of playing back from the current location. Before I

Please remove DivX 5.x from your system and you will be really surprised
with results.
You know DivX 5 codec is shareware and its protection system causes a calling
process to exit on exceptions. AVIedit neither throws exceptions nor handles
them, so DivX 5 just terminates it. Just try Indeo 5 codec or anything else,
instead of DivX 5, and you will not face this annoying error anymore.

Hello! I have a Pinnacle PCTV PCI and I'm having a strange
problem. It was working nice when I install it but now only the PCTV Vision

strange... some softwares work when I change it to Pal N or SECAM, but I can't
work like that, hete it's Pal M. I use Windows XP. Thank you... I don't know
who I can ask for help, the guys from the support don't know how to
do.
AM Software:
Just a few thoughts. VirtualDub can't use WDM capture devices at all.
AVIedit can be switched to WDM capture mode (default is Video for Windows mode)
- see Preferences dialog box for this. Windows Movie Maker can't start without
even a sound device, not only without video capture card. So, probably you
would need to update or replace drivers for PCTV (maybe even install an older
driver if only that one works). Also, check and update your DirectX version.
If you have a restore point in Windows XP, try to roll back to it. However all
the system changes (even those not related directly to PCTV) will be restored
to some previous state, this may affect other applications performance.
Mainly, you must call Microsoft and Pinnacle support guys for help.

AM Software:
It seems that you do not use AVIedit WDM capture mode, because your capture
card normally should be seen as a native device (something like "Chaintech GF4 capture driver..."),
not just as "WDM image capture". Try switch to WDM capture mode (see Preferences)
maybe this will help. Anyway, DivX codec version 5.0.nnn is no longer Video for
Windows compatible so anything strange can happen in virtually all software

because it violates standard requirements; please call their developers for support personally.

Hi, I think your editor is great! I've been able to edit out
commercials and unwanted greetz from my AVI's with your help! I have a
question, though. I have an AVI file where the audio and video tracks don't
match up. They are about one second off. I've found a point in the file to
delete some video frames to get them to match up (the introduction to the
show, which I've seen a hundred times), but when I try to save the new,
improved file, the video saves fine, but shows an error message at 50%
(presumably when it is saving the audio tracks). Am I able to save it like
this? Or are the tracks linked together, so I can't take out parts I don't
need? Or maybe it's just a problem with the audio saving, like I picked the
wrong settings? Thanks a lot! Quinn
AM Software:
Some avi files have wrong # of frames mentioned in their headers (typically
one frame more than actually exists). When AVIedit saves a file, it needs to
read all the frames, then write them out (maybe without the cuts you made).
However, the very last video frame can not be read and error occurs (yes,
typically at the middle of process). In this case
you can edit the avi header manually and decrease the number of frames by 1, then
repeat your edits and try saving it. Such a way, your file will be probably
more consistent with header and error will be worked around. The other possible
way is, set Interleave Factor to 1 when you save a file. AVIedit will "mix"
video frames with audio data, and even if last frame is inaccessible, you will
lose only the rest of audio track (because most of audio data is already
processed for now).
In fact, you can change video frame rate alone, to get in sync with audio. However
this could introduce some troubles when you encode such a file to VCD/SVCD -
because they do not allow odd frame rates (non-standard).
You can freely edit tracks the way you need, they are independent in this
context. However, for example if you append the second clip, your first clip
audio and video durations must match, or you'll get desynchronised 2nd clip,
and the anything past it.
Yes it is possible to get an error message when your codec can't encode audio
at all, or can't handle this clip audio format. However there will be different
error messages, not the same.

intended recording for 10 minutes. I now see by doing some tests that this

We do not think this is possible for real. Theoretically, you could copy
your sample avi file header to the failed capture file, then restore
number of frames in your file and size fields in the header. Finally, run divfix
utility to recreate avi index and maybe maybe you'd get your file OK. But
it is hard enough to do, because the only tool you would use is a hexadecimal
editor. Most of users give up facing this problem...

program to resize the screen so i can play at full size you know.
AM Software:
AVIedit lets you watch full-screen video sources live. However it seems it is
not exactly what you need. For better suggestions, please contact Pinnacle
support team directly and ask their support for their products.

decompressor is the best to use on this please help me out
AM Software:
IMHO, use DivX 5.02 codec (it offers both decoder and encoder). Maybe you
could get some success using xvid codec - unfortunately it is still not
production quality for now...

DX50 means DivX 5.x fourcc label.

Hi AviEdit Team, I've been searching google for a couple of days
before getting to your site, searching for converting an avi file to a reverse
played avi file. I found a couple of post's here about this subject. Tried
your advice (got 875 BMP files exported ~30sec clip), but no newly reverse
created avi :(. So I tried the option of "Create movie from .BMP files", but
then the import of the frames stops at xx!? Is there a limit or have I
overlooked something? TIA, Michel Scheffer The Netherlands

That is trial version limitation. You can try it for real, but extra power

i have panasonic nv-gs1 dv cam, how can i download recorded movies
to my pc running windows xp- in movie player, have tried s-video cable to no
avail. Pc will not recognise it as a capture device???????????????
AM Software:
You need either a 1394 Firewire card, or analog video capture card, in order
to save your movies to PC hard disk. S-video cable implies you have analog
video capture card (something like Pinnacle miroDC10+ series). 1394 card
needs a different cable and connection is pure digital data (it works like a
file copy from dv cam to pc). In AVIedit, you can set it up for analog or
digital video capture by Options|Preferences dialog box, Capture tab. Clear
"use legacy VfW" option to disable Video for Windows engine and enable WDM
(Windows Driver Model) instead. 1394 devices work only in WDM mode.

I'm just simply trying to rotate my video 90 degrees, and when i
export to a new .avi, it rotates just fine, but the sound doesn't match up.
The sound is either finished halfway through the video, or the video finishes
halfway through the sound.
AM Software:
It seems you did not set "same as source" option for output avi file. This
resulted in custom (15 frames per second by default) frame speed of video
stream, instead of the original. With given number of frames, video duration
is longer when frame speed is lower. This results in audio out-of-sync that
you have seen.

Is there any possible way to create simple transition effects
(like a fade) using AVIedit? I currently need to work between two progams and
it's time consuming and very easy to mess up. Great program by the
way...
AM Software:
Yes, sure. AVIedit includes about a ten of customizable transitions (gates,
wipes etc.) and the default is crossfade. Once you overlap two clips on
Timeline, AVIedit treats their common area as active transition. When you
"hover" the mouse the overlapped area, a dotted rectangle appears and if you
click it, a dialog box will show you more transition options. Or, please see
our Readings area (look for article about fades, it also has a learning
clip about itself).

hi I am trying to convert mpeg to avi, file size 780 mb, so i can
fit on cd-r,but every time i convert the file size is bigger, which codec
should i use from the drop down format window ? thanx
AM Software:
MPEG1 offers good compression ratio due to temporal compression: only
the parts of frame that have changed over time would save to resulting file.
This means for you, that only codecs with the same compression type can
produce a smaller file. For example, you can use any DivX codec (which actually
is hacked Microsoft MPEG4 v3 codec), Indeo 3, 4 or 5 (formerly Intel's, now
by Ligos, Inc.) or Cinepak by Radius. Your final choice may vary due to
audience specifics: whether they have (or able to install) your codec or not, what the
expected CPU speed is and so on. You may wish to convert .mpg file to avi
with lite and lossless compression first (using Huffyuv codec), then filter and
resize frame to some smaller size (if acceptable) and finally compress this
temporal avi file using MPEG4 avi codec.
Also conversion from MPEG1 to avi makes your audio stream uncompressed (raw PCM)
and increases the size of avi file. Try compressing it and see the difference.
For more information about codecs, visit our FOURCC area.

hi aviedit team -been using it for about a year now very nice,
just started using virtual dub to remove interlacing from avi clips (768x568)
pal , however, my originals are stored in indeo 5.1 best quality settings, i
remove interlacing using virtualdub and sav them as uncompressed, and they
look fantastic. then i open aviedit and save them back to indeo 5.1 to save
space, but i notice a drop in quality ,its almost as if its dropping the color
resolutiuon down to 16 bit from 24. any ideas ? (maybe its becouse im working
from indeo 5. 1 originals?) 2 nd question - dv avi movies imported into
aviedit using pinnacle software appear squashed slightly (horizontally), the
resolution is 720x560 i think instead of 768x568, any ways around this so they
display as normal ? cheers
AM Software:
Probably Indeo codec defaults to 16 bits per pixel output for speed?
AVIedit does not request the codec for a particular video format, thus
codec offers the picture it thinks the best for some reason. Maybe try
different desktop color depth and/or resolution (or, if possible, contact
us regarding the sample videos to reproduce the problem). On the other hand,
Indeo offers not the best quality for a given file size. Better you try
any MPEG4 based avi codec... By the way, often AVIedit offers better
deinterlace quality, rather than both VirtualDub built-in deinterlacer
and Smart Deinterlace filter by Donald Graft.
If you "hover" the video stream title in AVIedit, a tooltip window will popup,
displaying video frame dimensions. If they match those you expected, no
reason to worry about. Physical appearance of the frame on-screen depends on
desktop resolution and aspect ratio, AVIedit itself does not affect it.
When you need really change the frame aspect ratio, try either Crop/Resize
feature (see main menu Process item) or "fit to frame" option of Timeline.
That is, set the required output frame size first, then have source clips
to fit this size.

I need to fill area outside circle by some color. It seems that
works with regions is what I need. No problem to define circular region using
polygon with many verticles (I used 80): Edit/Special/Define/Polygon, than
Save all. But an attempt to apply this region: Process/Regions/OK gives no
visual effect. I used codec that AVIEditor do not recognize (SP54), which I've
obtained with AIPTEK 1.3 mega camera. I thought that this can be reason, but
when I save my file with MSVC codec, resutl was exactly the same. What is
wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.
AM Software:
Please make sure you really have and use regions. In Process/Regions dialog
box, check "use clipping region, if any" option, and proof that any regions
exist: near to Load regions button should be visible total # of frames
that have regions.
To apply regions you must Export the file to new one, not just Save.
After editing, regions remain linked to old frame numbers, which may render
them off the range and have no effect on video.
For real circles, ellipses and other smooth shapes it is better to create
a bitmap or .png image file using two colors (one is the filler, the other is
the "key" to transparency). Next, apply a Layer filter, using this image
in cromakey mode. Set the opacity to 100%, transparent color to your image
"key" color (in your case, any except green) and enjoy the results ;)

I'm looking to edit the audio of an AVI file. In a previous
comment you mention saving the audio alone, editing it with a program such as
CoolEdit, and then merging it back in. My issue is that I cannot figure out
how to save the audio alone. Do you simply mean delete the video part and
perform a "save as"? When I do this the audio is still an AVI file, and my
audio editing program can't handle that file type. Is there a way I could save
the audio as a wav or MP3? Thanks
AM Software:
AVIedit will write wav files when you select both the proper output file type (sound)
and extension (.wav). Otherwise the file is written as "no video" avi file,
exactly as you said.
AVIedit does not write .mp3 files but can import (convert to .wav) them without
quality loss. (No VBR is possible, though). When you edit something in mp3 format,
you can add this later to avi file, using one extra step (mp3->wav conversion).

Please visit our FourCC section for list of codecs by fourcc. DX50 stands for
DivX 5.x video codec that is a must to see movies encoded by this codec.
The no sound problem also refers to missing audio codec. Please read our FAQ
area about how do you detect avi compression formats in AVIedit. When you know
the codec name, it is easy to find it with Google ;)

What the file size is when 30 sec is over? If it is about 2GB and you're using
Win98, WinME or WinXP+FAT32, then maybe no software will help. Either apply
some compression to your video stream, or upgrade to NTFS (that means, Win2K
or WinXP+NTFS volume). AVIedit will write long capture sessions in parts by
up to 2GB each. For more information about Panasonic software please contact
the vendor.

Most likely, you can't. The problem is that avi file starts with a header
where the compression format is listed, also # of frames and other important
data. You can try using DivFix software that is primarily designed to rebuild
truncated DivX avi files. Maybe it will help, or maybe won't help. Also
you can ask Marcus (author of AVI_IO) directly.

>Save As >I get an error window w/the banner "AVIEdit Error" and the

here...what am I doing wrong? Note: The original is on the E: drive and the
"new" file would be saved to C: Only my first try at AVI editing in general
and your software, in specific, so you may have to spell things out for me .

I've tried "fiddling" with the settings
(i.e. choosing the interleave [leaving it at 1], etc.). Can't seem to change
the error or generate a new one
AM Software:
Most important, you need Export clips, instead of Save, when you need to add
any effects. This is frequently asked question. Also when you edit MJPG
encoded videos (typically the ones from a digital cameras, Fuji Finepix, Canon
G series etc.) and your system does not have MJPG codec installed, AVIedit
uses its own built-in codec that is invisible to Windows. Due to this feature,
Save fails but Export works. Maybe that is the secret you need to know ;)

I have a TV shows entire season on my hdd and would like to burn
them to disk. My problem is that soe of the are recored in MPG format and are
MUCH larger then the ones created in AVI format. I tried to Convert them using
the current version of AVIedit and using compression and mpeg4, but the output
file is larger then the input file... I must admit I am a total novice at this
so any help would be Great...
AM Software:
The right output format name choice is not enough. MPEG4 compressor allows
you to set data stream from approx. 10KB/sec to 1MB/sec, which makes your
files tiny or huge depending on what you actually selected. Most widely
spread DivX films use 768 kbps bitrate (or similar ones), that lets you fit
a movie onto a single CD-R. Depending on your source clips quality, you can
compress them more or less, producing the desired file size.

got divx 5.2. after that its open the file but the thing is that if didnt have
any picture or sound is it the movie file or the codec?? thx alot if u can
help
AM Software:
DivX 5.02 is a video decompressor. Your missing sound can be a result of
missing audio codec and not related to DivX. DX50 fourcc means DivX 5 codec,
you are right. However the codec itself has a lot of bugs (especially with
odd frame sizes and advanced processing options at encode time) so it may
not work correctly (try another film...) - and also ad-supported version
of the codec requires you have a special software module running. When you
remove this "ad-server" codec refuses to work, too.
